A Manufacturing Success Story

Summary The home of Land Rover production for nearly 70 years, Solihull is one of the largest manufacturing growth stories in the UK thanks to £1.5 billion of investment in the past five years.

Land Rover’s Spiritual Home

Production of Land Rovers began at the West Midlands plant in the summer of 1948. More than two million Series Land Rovers and Defenders rolled off the line at Lode Lane during its 68-year production run. Solihull has also been the home of Range Rover production since the vehicle’s launch in 1970.

The Range

Solihull is producing the widest vehicle ranges of all the company’s manufacturing plants. The site currently operates three-shift, 24-hour production to meet global demand for the Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. In 2015, the plant welcomed the Jaguar brand to the site for the first time in its history, with the production of the all-new XE and F-PACE.

Continual Growth

The 300-acre site is Jaguar Land Rover’s flagship manufacturing facility. Ongoing development means that Solihull represents one of the greatest manufacturing growth stories in the UK for a generation. In the past five years, production at the plant has trebled and workforce has doubled – more than 10,700 people are currently employed there.

Manufacturing Excellence

£1.5 billion of investment over five years has transformed Solihull into one of the most advanced vehicle manufacturing facilities in the world. The Lode Lane site is a global centre of excellence for aluminium and lightweight vehicle manufacturing, boasting Europe's largest aluminum body shop. The Range Rover body side is the world’s largest single aluminium pressing in the automotive industry, weighing just 7kg.

The arrival of the new Jaguar XE marks a new chapter in the history of this plant and showcases the flexibility of our manufacturing operation thanks to a strategic investment in aluminium technologies and infrastructure.

An all-new aluminium body shop and final assembly line, covering an area equivalent in size to 22 football pitches, was built for production of the Jaguar XE. This state-of-the-art, £500 million ‘factory within a factory’ contains 615 high-tech robots. At full capacity, a Jaguar XE will roll off the line every 78 seconds. A further £120 million has been invested into the new facility to support production of the F-PACE, once again showcasing Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to UK industry.
