JLR INVESTING $180M IN ITS NORTH AMERICAN TECH HUB, DEVELOPING CONNECTED CAR AND DRIVER AID TECHNOLOGIES

  • Engineers at JLR’s Portland engineering facility join global drive to next generation connectivity and autonomous driving systems for future vehicles

Portland, OR– Tuesday February 11, 2025: JLR is announcing a $180m investment in its USA technology hub in Portland, Oregon, as part of a global drive to develop and bring to market next generation connectivity and autonomous driving technologies in future JLR vehicles.

Over the next decade, the company will invest around $180 million into the 50,000 sq. ft technology hub as its engineers develop a range of cutting‑edge connectivity and autonomous technologies, as vehicles become increasingly software‑driven and clients desire an increasing array of apps, services and features.

JLR opened its technology hub in Portland in 2014, a location chosen for its proximity to California and Seattle, and tech giants such as Amazon, NVIDIA, Apple and Google. The facility grew in 2016 and 2017 and was expanded further in 2024.

In future, JLR is aiming to give its clients ultraquick and efficient connectivity to offer limitless in‑car‑entertainment, instantly updatable driving features and services via over‑the‑air downloads, as well as the latest autonomous driving systems, enabling hands free driving on the highway.

The team at Portland is also working on elements of car connectivity to provide a modern luxury driving experience, including augmented reality on the car’s parking and head up displays, enabling the driver’s phone to act as a key, and V2X systems enabling cars to talk to each other.

To date, engineers at Portland have played an important role in developing the on‑board electrical system ‘EVA2’ found in millions of JLR vehicles like Range Rover and Defender, autonomous driving ADAS systems, driver aids such as parking cameras and integrating and connecting Amazon’s Alexa ecosystem into our vehicles.

“We are incredibly proud to be developing cutting‑edge connected technology with our global engineering colleagues. Over the last decade, our technology hub here at Portland has grown and we have recruited a highly skilled, talented and diverse workforce. We are investing around $180m over the next decade to develop technologies that deliver the ultimate connected luxury experience for our clients.

We are transforming our business with the aim to become carbon net zero across our supply chain, products, and operations by 2039.

Electrification is central to our strategy and before the end of the decade our brands will each have a pure electric model, while Jaguar will be entirely electric.

The flexibility of our world‑leading powertrain technologies means we can continue to offer hybrid and ICE vehicles in our ranges, as we begin to roll out electric options, to match demand in the global transition to electric.

At heart we are a British company, with two design and engineering sites, two vehicle manufacturing facilities, a components and finishing facility, an electric propulsion manufacturing centre, and a battery assembly centre in the UK. We also have vehicle plants in China (joint venture), Slovakia, India, and Brazil, as well as seven technology hubs across the globe.
